Wildcard Certificates
Secure unlimited subdomains with one certificate
This kind of certificates are not to be confused with Multi Domain certificates, since the way they work is different. While for Multi Domain certificates you can actually certify, explicitly, any domain name at your will, with Wildcard certificates you can secure an unlimited number of subdomains.
Supposing you own the domain “recipes-from-the-world.com”, when you request a Wildcard certificate for this domain, you will be able to secure all third level subdomains, no matter how many they are. This means that you could have “italy.recipes-from-the-world.com”, “germany.recipes-from-the-world.com” and so forth with all the countries of the world. As you can guess, this kind of certificate represents the best choice when you have many subdomains under the same domain. You could get the same with a Multi Domain certificate too, but you will have to know all subdomains in advance, when requesting the certificate, as well as pay a fee for each additional domain name not included in the Multi Domain certificate!
